Key Tips to a Successful Career Change

Do you have your sights on a particular career? With a little planning, preparation and effort, you can maximise the chance that you will achieve your goals and land your dream job. Here are some top tips to help inspire you.

Set Career Goals

Sometimes, all it takes is an action plan, some patience and a little determination. Consider how you will get from your current position to the one that you want, and what experience or knowledge you need to achieve this. Sometimes, it just takes a little planning to help realise that your journey is shorter than you might have thought.

Work placements

A work or voluntary placement can give you a real feel for what it is like to work in a particular role and give you experience that could help you progress in a related career. We often promote work and voluntary placements on this website for Six Town Housing tenants and others. Click here to see what is currently available.

Job Shadowing

If the job you are interested in exists within your organisation, perhaps you can speak to your line manager and gain work experience through job shadowing a colleague who undertakes the role. This will expand your skills and knowledge of how the business operates and help you decide if it is indeed the career that you want. It might also help you make a useful contact within another team, who could offer you additional advice or coaching to help you get the experience you need to undertake that kind of role.

Book that Course

Accessing education and training is one of the best ways you can gain the knowledge you need to either enter a new career or be used as a way to access work experience. Most colleges have online and paper guides of course they have available that you can browse, including evening sessions for those who need a bit of flexibility to attend.

If further education is not something you can afford, try to look out for free short courses or taster sessions to build up your knowledge (for example, we run regular food hygiene and first aid courses for Six Town Housing tenants across Bury).
